CONGRATS TO TCU RIFLE -- NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!

A dominating performance in air rifle Saturday helped the TCU Rifle team claim its first-ever overall NCAA National Championship. The Horned Frogs defeated Alaska 4,675-4,653, erasing a six-point deficit coming into the day. TCU was also crowned the air rifle National Champion after posting a team score of 2,361 on Saturday.

Three of the Frogs' four shooters qualified for the air rifle finals. In her final event at TCU, Erin Lorenzen capped an outstanding career with a second place finish in air rifle, firing a 104.4 in the finals for a score of 697.4. Sarah Scherer tallied a sixth place finish after shooting a 102.2 in the finals for a score of 693.2. Caitlin Morrissey rounded out the final with an eighth place finish after firing a 99.7 in the finals. She totaled 689.7 on the day.

The Frogs trailed Alaska by six points entering the day, but an impressive showing by Morrissey (590) and Lorenzen (593) in the first air rifle relay Saturday morning turned the six-point deficit into a 15-point advantage. Beard, who narrowly missed the finals, fired a 587 and Scherer shot a 591 to wrap up the National Championship in the final relay of the day.

TCU has become a national power in rifle the last four years under head coach Karen Monez. They have two third place finishes (2007 and 2009) as well as a fifth place finish in 2008.
The last team NCAA national championship in school history was the women's golf team in 1983. Football was also crowned national champions in 1935 and 1938.
